Background of the Study
Substance abuse is a growing public health concern globally, contributing to a significant burden of psychiatric morbidity, particularly among young adults (WHO, 2024). The abuse of substances such as alcohol, cannabis, and opioids is linked to various mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and psychotic disorders (Mohammed et al., 2024).
In Sokoto State, socio-economic challenges, peer influence, and limited awareness of the risks of substance abuse exacerbate the prevalence of drug-related psychiatric issues among young adults. The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Sokoto, plays a critical role in managing these conditions, yet comprehensive data on the relationship between substance abuse and psychiatric morbidity in this demographic are scarce.
This study seeks to investigate the impact of substance abuse on psychiatric morbidity among young adults in Sokoto, providing insights for preventive and therapeutic interventions.
Statement of the Problem
The prevalence of substance abuse among young adults in Sokoto is alarmingly high, with significant mental health implications. Psychiatric morbidity resulting from substance abuse places a considerable burden on healthcare facilities, families, and communities (Adeoye et al., 2024).
Despite these challenges, there is limited empirical evidence on the specific psychiatric disorders associated with substance abuse in young adults within the region. This knowledge gap hinders the development of targeted interventions to address the dual challenges of substance abuse and psychiatric morbidity. This study aims to explore this relationship, offering a foundation for effective mental health strategies.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the types of substances commonly abused by young adults in Sokoto State.
2. To examine the impact of substance abuse on psychiatric morbidity among young adults.
3. To recommend strategies for reducing substance abuse and its mental health effects in young adults.
Research Questions
1. What are the common substances abused by young adults in Sokoto State?
2. How does substance abuse affect psychiatric morbidity among young adults?
3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce substance abuse and its psychiatric impact?
Research Hypotheses
1. Young adults in Sokoto commonly abuse specific substances.
2. Substance abuse significantly contributes to psychiatric morbidity among young adults.
3. Targeted interventions can reduce substance abuse and its associated psychiatric disorders.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on young adults aged 18–35 receiving care at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Sokoto, between 2023 and 2025. Data will be collected through clinical records, substance abuse assessments, and psychiatric evaluations. Limitations include underreporting of substance use and challenges in accessing all affected individuals due to stigma and socio-political factors.
